7 Sustainable Ways to Celebrate Fall in 2024

Fall Family Activities: Embracing Nature and Sustainability

It’s Fall Y’all! (Yes, I just did that). I don’t care – I love to celebrate fall! I may not be That Girl with the boots, the flannel, and the PSL, but give me a crisp fall morning and hoodie weather and I am one happy camper.

And fall is the perfect season to enjoy the beauty of nature while spending quality time with your family. As the leaves change color and the air becomes crisp, there are countless opportunities to engage in eco-friendly activities that foster a love for the environment and promote sustainable living. Here’s how you can celebrate fall with your family while embracing nature and sustainability:

Celebrate Fall

1. Nature Walks and Leaf Collecting

  • Take your family on nature walks through local parks, forests, or nature reserves. Encourage your kids to collect fallen leaves, acorns, pinecones, and other natural treasures. (Who am I kidding – no encouragement necessary! This is a favorite pastime of my kids.) These collections can be used for crafting projects or simply as a way to explore and appreciate the diversity of the natural world. We keep an outdoor “treasure” pot for sticks and larger/messy items, and a small nature display inside for favorite rocks and bits. Not only is this great for celebrating fall, but this activity also provides an excellent opportunity to teach children about the changing seasons, different tree species, and the importance of preserving natural habitats.

2. Visit a Local Pumpkin Patch or Apple Orchard

  • Celebrate fall and support local farmers by visiting a nearby pumpkin patch or apple orchard. Picking your own pumpkins and apples not only reduces the carbon footprint associated with transporting produce but also gives your family a hands-on experience with where food comes from. Afterward, you can use your harvest to make homemade pies, apple cider, or pumpkin soup, promoting cooking with fresh, local ingredients. Bonus! Make a commitment to plant your own pumpkin patch next year! Pumpkins are easy to grow as long as you have the space. And the squeals of delight from the kiddos and/or your spouse when those pumpkins grow will be well worth it!

3. Host a Backyard Campout

  • Enjoy the cool fall evenings by setting up a tent in your backyard for a family campout. Cook dinner over a fire pit, make s’mores, and tell stories under the stars. This activity minimizes energy use compared to indoor entertainment and allows your family to connect with nature right at home. Bonus – no dishes! Kids can collect sticks and use those to roast their hotdogs and marshmallows.

4. Create a Fall-Themed Nature Scavenger Hunt

  • Organize a scavenger hunt with a list of fall-themed items for your children to find, such as different colored leaves, specific types of nuts, or signs of animals preparing for winter. This can be done in your backyard, at a park, or during a hike. It’s a great way to celebrate fall, engage kids with their surroundings, and encourage them to observe the natural world closely. Plus, it’s a zero-waste, screen-free activity! Sign me up!

5. Build a Wildlife Habitat in Your Yard

  • Use the fall season to create a welcoming environment for local wildlife. Build bird feeders, set up a small brush pile for small animals, or plant native plants that provide food and shelter. Involving your children in these activities helps them learn about the importance of biodiversity and how small actions can positively impact the environment.

6. Fall Gardening and Composting

  • Fall is an ideal time to start composting if you haven’t already. Collect fallen leaves and yard clippings to add to your compost bin, teaching your kids about the process of decomposition and how composting reduces waste. Additionally, fall gardening activities like planting bulbs for spring, harvesting late-season crops, or preparing the garden for winter are excellent ways to engage children in sustainable practices. And if you have a decent sized yard or garden, you need all hands on deck at this time of year!

7. DIY Fall Crafts Using Natural Materials

  • Encourage creativity by making DIY crafts using the natural materials your kids collect on walks. Create leaf rubbings, make wreaths from twigs and leaves, or paint pinecones. This not only reduces the need for store-bought crafting materials but also fosters a connection with nature through art. To take it one step further, conduct these art projects in the great outdoors to minimize mess and boost inspiration.

These activities not only provide fun and educational experiences but also instill a sense of environmental stewardship in your children. By embracing nature and sustainability during the fall season, you create lasting memories while teaching your family the importance of living in harmony with the earth. What an important accomplishment. You deserve a long fall walk and maybe a PSL 🙂
